With his Colorado Rockies teammates pursuing a 50 AB hitless streak, Jhoulys Chacin (3-2, 2.70) decided if there was going to be any entertainment at all, it was up to him. The right hander proceeded to walk the bases full of St Louis Cardinals in the 2nd, 4th, and finally 5th innings, when the Cards broke through with 2, and went-on to beat Colorado 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium in the Gateway to the West. Adam Wainwright (5-2, 2.30) meanwhile plowed through 23 listless Rockies hitters (he walked Todd Helton in the 5th) before Nolan Arenado singled sharply to center with one out in the 8th. Dexter Fowler extended Wainwright a batter on a single with two down in the 9th and Colorado avoided being 1-hit two nights in a row. They settled for shutouts.
Allen Craig tripled into the left-field corner leading-off the 2nd against Chacin. After Yadier Molina walked Matt Adams grounded to a drawn-in Arenado, who cut-off Craig at the plate, Yorvit Torrealba running him down. David Freese then singled, pushing Molina to 3rd and Adams to 2nd, but Chacin toyed with Pete Cozma and dispatched Wainwright with strike-outs. In the 4th it was Craig again, this time leading-off with a single. Molina followed with a single, Craig to 2nd. Adams flew-out to left, then Chacin walked Freese to load ’em up. But Cozma and Wainwright bit it again.
Then in the 5th Matt Carpenter, Jon Jay and Matt Holiday singled to open the inning. Craig hit a sacrifice fly to plate Carpenter, and after Molina flew-out to left, Adams, the third Matt to bat in the inning, singled to score Jay.
Josh Outman came-on for Chacin, who threw 91 pitches (53 strikes) in 5 complete, allowing 8 hits, walking 3, and striking-out 5. Outman was perfect in the 6th, but surrendered a run in the 7th on singles by Holliday, Craig (who was 3 for 3), and Molina. Wilton Lopez came-on after Outman struck-out Adams, and he handled the Cardinals in the 8th, despite two more singles from Carpenter and Jay. St Louis had 13 hits for the day. The Cards elected not to hit in the 9th.
CUDDYER ON DL; BLACKMON RECALLED
Michael Cuddyer is suffering from a bulging disc in his neck and was placed on the 15 day Disabled List, retro-active to Wednesday May 8, when he last played against the Yankees. Charlie Blackmon was recalled from AAA Colorado Springs. Cuddyer told RoOT Sports’ Marc Stout he had taken a half dozen swings at a tee in the morning and realized he was going to have to shut it-down. Cuddyer told Stout he first experienced the disc issue in 2004, but it went-away and didn’t recur until 2011 when a [epidural] shot cleared it-up in short-order. Blackmon has been tearing it up for the Sky Sox, hitting .336 with 3 home runs and 21 RBI.
DLR v GARCIA TOMORROW
Jorge De La Rosa (3-3, 3.52) will pitch for the Rockies tomorrow against St Louis’ Jaime Garcia (4-1, 2.25). It’ll be another 12:15 MDT start, reminiscent of a Bronco’s road game in New Jersey. Colorado hopes to salvage 1 of 3 from the Cardinals.
