Slow News Day

As the Colorado Rockies prepare to encounter the Arizona Diamondbacks at 6:10 pm MDT this evening on Wade Miley Garden Gnome Day at Chase Field in Phoenix (TJ I hope you’re one of the first 20,000), not much notable is happening on the old beat.  Rockies starter Jeff Francis is coming off 3 lousy appearances. Carlos Gonzalez is in a 3-29 slump.  Anibal Sanchez struck-out 17 Braves on Friday night and Jordan Zimmerman 1-hit the Reds.  And the Yankees lost Ivan Nova and Francisco Cervelli in a victory over the disappointing Blue Jays.  But you can head on out to the erstwhile BOB and pick-up a free gnome just for spending a couple hundred bucks at the old ballpark.

Francis (1-2, 8.44) faces the gnome himself.  Miley (2-0, 2.77) has taken-up where he left-off in 2012, when he nearly earned Rookie of the Year honors.  He’s pitched into the 7th in all but his first start at Milwaukee on April 5, giving up 8 runs and 21 hits in 26 innings of work.  None of Colorado’s 64 2012 victories came against the left-hander, who beat them 4 times.  Francis has indeed been stinking it up. After a strong outing in the home opener, he’s given-up 15 runs in 10 innings over 3 starts.  The vultures are circling after a decent Tyler Chatwood stand-in for Jhoulys Chacin, who’ll return from the Disabled List in early May.

We are seeing the post-Helton starting lineup for the Rockies tonight.  Eric Young Jr is back on the bench, Jordan Pacheco is at 1st base batting 2nd, and Jeff Rutledge hits 7th (I like it).  The D’backs have Martin Prado leading-off tonight.  Center-fielder AJ Pollock hits 2nd.  Cliff Pennington is in at shortstop for Didi Gregorius, beaned in the 7th by Colorado’s Josh Outman on Friday.

It’s 97° in Phoenix this afternoon, so guessing is the gnomes will be indoors.  It’s unknown whether ROOT Sports has prepared a spectacular rivaling the one they cooked-up for Eric Young Sr bobblehead day, but you can bet Jeff and Marc and Drew Goodman are up for anything.  It’s Jerry and Jack on 850 KOA am.

Honestly – if Helton hung it up, things could get simple.

Bring up Arenado and give him 3rd. Play a combination of Pacheco and Cuddyer at 1st. When Cuddyer plays 1st – EY plays OF.

Fowler (or EY)
Pacheco (or Fowler)

Maybe you flip 7 and 8, but that’s an easy lineup to write everyday. In fact – that lineup might even allow you to carry an extra RP.

Nelson hasn’t done anything as of late, so I expect Arenado to come up when the clock expires

You guys nailed it! BIG NEWS! Arenado called up and Nelson DFAd. I like it, it shows the team thinks it can win now and to hell with the super two time clock – GO ROCKIES!

HA! Jeem, if i was going to the game, it would NOT be to get a Garden Gnome! And I think 20k of those things will last a while. However, I am digging the Rockies’ bobblehead promotions going on…I looked online to buy the set but its a crazy amount…nope. Wife’s Bday weekend and her wish is to just do nothing (can’t argue with that, just like most of you we’ve been going like crazy). We talked about going but… Read more »

I’ve been sort of neutral on Dexter Fowler. Too much hype when he came up, but also too much criticism during the down times.

That being said – and with all due respect to egossage – I think the guy looks really, really good at the plate now. Don’t want to jinx him – but I think he’s over the hump and is a top 25 MLB outfielder.

What’s with the weak effort from Tulo on the stolen base in 9th? He had to know that if that ball gets past him the runner ends up at third with one out. You would expect a better effort from your so called “team leader”. Rosario had a disgusted look on his face when it happened and I can’t say I blame him.

Could someone explain to me how a team can get 9 hits and draw 7 walks — 16 baserunners! — and score just 2 runs over 10 innings? Obviously I didn’t watch this one, but reading the box score that’s just mind boggling. Can you find me a clutch hit somewhere? Looks like Cargo left 5 on base. He’s gone ice cold in record time.

last night was deja vu 2012 for me

Totally agree, Tulo has to make an effort to block that ball in the 10th inning. That was pathetic. It was a bad throw and more than likely ends up in center field anyways, but come on Tulo, at least try to stick out your glove. Cargo needs to be benched, if you are going to take careless hacks AB after AB then why even put him in the lineup. Give him a day or two and see if he… Read more »
