Snakes in the Desert; Mets at Coors

Drew Goodman told me the jerseys were this nice, sentimental, nostalgic notion Colorado Rockies’ manager Walt Weiss had on Friday afternoon, but look, when you’ve got Brandon Barnes on your side you roll with the sleeveless shirts.  Barnes, the outfielder obtained in the Dexter Fowler trade with Houston, is adding some edge to a Colorado team that took Division series from despised rivals San Francisco and Los Angeles last week and rocks into the present one with a 14-12 record and the growing sense they have the stuff to contend.

They continue a 6-game roadie tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix starting at 7:40 MDT.  Left-hander Franklin Morales (2-1, 3.86) takes the mound for the Rockies against fellow-southpaw Wade Miley (2-2, 4.50) of the Dbacks.  After 3 in Phoenix the Rox head home to LoDo for a 4 game stretch with the New York Mets, who are off to a 14-11 start and trail the Atlanta Braves by 3-1/2 games in the NL East.

In addition to the antics of Barnes, outfielder Charlie Blackmon, “Nazty,” continues his tear, ripping along at a .402 pace.  Justin Morneau checks in at  .356 with 19 ribbies.  Nolan Arenado, in the words of SD Carp, is going all Brooks Robinson on us, Tulo’s pickin’ ’em like the old days and slugging at .646, and the guy who wears Zero has an ERA to match.  Colorado went bombs away with the Giants on Monday, got a gem from Morales the next night, struck for 3 in the 11th in LA on Friday, and yesterday afternoon it was Jorge De La Rosa going 7 and looking a lot like Jorge De La Rosa.

Fireballing right-hander Chad Bettis bit it in the 11th Wednesday afternoon and found himself in Colorado Springs in favor of fellow righty Chris Martin.  Enigmatic Juan Nicasio bumbled righteously Saturday and has to be looking over his shoulder with Jhoulys Chacin rehabbing effectively in California. And Carlos Gonzalez is mired in the heartless abyss of a slump.  Due Carlos!  Yer due!

Morales as noted will be coming off the 7-inning 1-run/5-hit outing he used to stifle San Francisco on Tuesday.  Miley, who dominated the Rockies for 8 innings on April 6, pitched Wednesday at Chicago and got no decision as Arizona defeated the Cubs 7-5 in the first of 3-straight victories for the Diamondbacks, who have struggled from the outset in 2014.  Miley gave-up 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings, but he struck-out 7.

AJ Pollack will lead it-off for Arizona, which runs-out the same basic cast of characters as 2013.  The Dbacks remain dangerous and manager Kirk Gibson and his Staff of Champions are undoubtedly seething with frustration at the team’s slow start.  Barnes is back in the Colorado lineup, hitting ahead of Tulowitzki, who is swapped with the scuffling Gonzalez.  Arenado moves up to 5th and Morneau is 6th against the wiley Miley.

It’s sunny in Phoenix.  Game time temperature will be in the mid 80’s, so here’s betting the Chase Field roof will be open with the wind drifting-across from left-to right at 7 to 9 mph.  Blue-Skies Goodman man’s the RoOt TV booth with sidekick Jeff Huson.  Jerry and Jack have it on radio KOA am 850.

man i love these “weekly wrap” pre-game’s you are doin’ my friend…gotta say, as optimistic as i am after several great series wins, i’m less than excited playing the Snakes in AZ…they have had our number for a while now and I don’t know why…i’d love to get outta there with a series win, or perhaps our first sweep of the year, but i’m guessing we will be lucky to get one before hitting the road…

Let’s make Miley a dud tonight. When I checked expanded standings, the Rockies are 7-9 on the road. Take 2 of 3 or a sweep and we will be either 1 above or 1 below 500 which would be an impressive start despite bullpen giving away winnable games in some road games. Arizona’s only 2-10 or something like that at home. So let’s go for a sweep and knock them Snakes 10 games back of us. (now they’re 7 back… Read more »

Re: Nolan going all Brooks Robinson. KOA guys interviewing Schemmel today and he said Scully called NoDo “better than Robinson.” Pretty heady stuff for the young fella.

I said it during Sunday’s game. I went on-line looked at every great 3B play by Robinson, Nettles, Schmidt and Rolan and I said it then – it was the best play I ever saw a 3B make. This team believes it can win and it has role players who can contribute along with the stars. If…big if…if they keep getting QS 4 out of 5 games, this team is going to be in the playoff hunt. They just outpitched… Read more »

Minors: Tulsa good: Jon Gray, 5.1 shutout innings, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K. Tulsa bad: Tom Murphy, 0-5, 3 K, now hitting .182. Sky Sox: Bettis 2 shutout innings, Masset 1 shutout inning. We’ll see both (Bettis again) before this year is over. Tim Wheeler: HR; Ryan Wheeler 3-4, HR, double. Modesto: Trevor Story, 4-5, 2B, 3B, now hitting .341. Repeating Hi A (still young for his league) and getting totally different results. Very promising. Chris O’Dowd, C, son… Read more »

Too much good stuff coming out of the Rox–must be the purple sun-glasses. Or, it could be we’ve got a different team attitude this year. I tried my best to dis on Barnes, but he’s certainly turned my head and this quote from the DP is why.Great to see some scrappy players on our side. “I’m not the most talented player on the field, and I know that,” Barnes said. “But that doesn’t stop me from going out there and… Read more »
