Some Minor Moves

The Rockies Tweeted today that they made a few minor moves – signing infielder Brendan Harris, catcher Jose Gonzalez and two right-handed pitchers: Zach Simons and Carlos Torres.  All 4 look to be signed to minor league deals.  Harris, 31, spent the 2011 season with the Orioles’ top affiliate, where he posted a .225/.282/.331 line with ten home runs in 565 plate appearances. The seven-year veteran has MLB experience at all four infield positions.

Looking at Harris’ line it appears that he’ll fit right in. lol. These signing appear to be nothing more than minor league depth. Perhaps going off topic… It appears to me that the MLB roster is pretty close to being set on the offensive side of the ball. I have the following players as locks or near locks to be on the opening day roster: Hernandez (R) Helton (L) Blake (R) Tulo (R) Cargo (L) Fowler (S) Cuddyer (R) Rosario… Read more »

Watch the Mariners closely this weekend/next week. Some rumblings that they’re on the verge of doing something “significant.” They’re a team that could use Seth Smith……but not sure that (alone) qualifies as significant. They also have (potentially) some expendable, attractive starting pitching.

Yikes – I significantly underestimated what it would take to get Pineda. Jesus Montero!!!

And if anyone besides his peeps in Evergreen care, Kouzmanoff has signed a minor league deal with the Royals.

Ike, excellent job on the likely roster. I agree with you: not a decent 2b candidate in the lot. Right now the front-runner for the 2b job has got to be a guy who isn’t even on the roster yet. So I expect (hope) for some kind of spring training deal, or a pick-up when some other (better) team waives a player who didn’t make their roster. Grading the roster moves so far this offseason: Cuddyer: B- He is a… Read more »

“Cuddyer: …because he’s not a platoon player like Smith. The more I think about this, the more I think he’s more likely to have value as a Helton replacement than as a rightfielder.” Agbayani, you got it exactly right! The real value of Cuddyer is not his replacement value over Smith, it’s his improvement over Spilly/EYJ/etc. We still have Smith, and on days the Rox go against a RHP, Helton can be rested with Cuddy at 1B and Smith in… Read more »

I also think that Ike’s roster is pretty close, except that I think that Rosario starts the year in CS in order to catch 3 days out of 4 and to buy the extra year in terms of free agency and arbitration. Also, the roster could change based on who Smith gets traded for. There’s a chance that he invovled in a trade that gets us a starting 2B. If we don’t trade for a 2B, is Ryan Theriot still… Read more »

Julian, I totally disagree with you in that IF Arenado or Rosario are ready to start five games a week in the MLB, we will see them at Coors Field. While the Rockies have a history of being very patient with young players, I do not think they will hesitate if they figure that either of these players is really ready. In addition to that, DanO doesn’t have the luxury of waiting around several years to see if burning an… Read more »

Rich M, I hope that I’m wrong and you’re right. I hope that Arenado is so good in spring training that the team has no choice but to hand him the third base starting job. I doubt that it will happen, but I hope that it does. Now, do I think that Arenado will be the starter in September, absolutely.

I think some of us are grading the winter moves a tad bit too early; we still have the Seth Smith chip. As for the Huston Street salary dump, I think it has to be graded a “B” cuz we would not have had Cuddy without Street’s salary dump. I think Cuddyer is underrated, and I truly believe he will be in for a great year. Casey Blake would not have signed with the Rockies if they thought he is… Read more »

Smith has been a big time first half player the last couple of years with gradual declines later in the season. At this point, unless DOD can strike gold, we are better up keeping Smith for a while, hoping for another fast start, and then moving him when his value is highest.
