The Colorado Rockies registered their 81st loss of 2013 Saturday night, leaving no margin for error if they mean to finish even-Steven. What better way to wind-up a nostalgic 20th Anniversary season than channeling 2007 with a 13 game winning tear? They’ll send No. 1 starter Jhoulys Chacin (13-8, 3.09) to the mound this afternoon at 2:10 MDT against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix to start the streak. Chacin will be opposed by Dbacks right-hander Randall Delgado (4-6, 4.04).
Chacin has turned in a tremendous 2013 season after spending the better part of 2012 on the Disabled List. He’s become the staff horse and stopper, backing-up a No. 5 slot in the Rockies rotation that’s been a disaster since the calendar turned May. Chacin threw 100 pitches in 7 innings at San Francisco on Monday, turning a 2-1 lead over to the bullpen. Colorado eventually succumbed in 10 innings, 3-2. He allowed 4 hits, walked only one, and struck-out 5. Delgado, part of the large trade with Atlanta that brought Martin Prado to Arizona and sent Justin Upton to the Braves, lost Monday in Los Angeles, lasting only 2-2/3 and surrendering 5 runs on 7 hits and a walk.
It’s a “rest the regulars” Sunday for the Rockies. Josh Rutledge will be at 2nd-base. Corey Dickerson’s in right, Ryan Wheeler’s in left and Charlie Blackmon has center. Jordan Pacheco has 1st, the Bean’s at 3rd, and Yorvit Torrealba will catch Chacin. The Diamondbacks will run-out the same group as Saturday, except Chris Owings stands-in for Didi Gregorius at short.
Chase Field saw some daylight Saturday, but 103° should keep the lid on it this afternoon. Drew, Jeff, Jenny and the Cowboy have your TV show on ROoT, but tune over to 630 KHOW for Jerry and Jack. There’s some big football game happening over in New Jersey that’s got KOA all booked-up.
