On May 16 the Colorado Rockies returned to Coors Field from a disappointing series in Chicago to face the Giants in the first of 10 challenging games against Division rivals San Francisco and Arizona. 9 games later they’ve managed 6 victories with a 7th in their sights this afternoon as they face the Giants one more time at 2:05 pm MDT at ATT+T Park in San Francisco. Veteran Jon Garland (3-5, 5.19) takes the hill for Colorado against right-hander Matt Cain of (3-2, 5.12) the Giants.
Garland, who’s been grousing the Rockies’ pitch-count limits haven’t allowed him to truly express his mediocrity, lost to Arizona on Monday, his 5th in 6 starts dating to April 23. Rumors out of Tulsa, OK had Roy Ozwalt making his first 2013 start there on Friday. The right-handed Garland went 6 innings against the Diamondbacks, allowing 5 runs on 11 hits. Cain lasted 7 against Washington in a San Francisco win over the Nationals. He allowed only 2 runs on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts, but wasn’t around to get the decision when Pablo Sandoval delivered a walk-off homer.
Colorado manager Walt Weiss is fielding the full dose of medicine behind Garland this afternoon. Wilin Rosario returns to catch and hit 7th, with DJ LeMahieu dropping down to 8th and Nolan Arenado hitting in the 2-hole. Gregor Blanco gets the center-field and lead-off duties for Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy. Angel Pagan still hasn’t caught his breath from that dash around the bases. Andres Torres will be in left-field.
Partly cloudy skies and 60° temperatures are predicted for San Francisco this afternoon with humidity in the 80% range. Starching winds will blow straight-out at 15 MPH. Drew and Jeff will have the telecast on RoOt while Jerry and Jack think-up more Rockies-friendly descriptions of umpire screw-ups on radio KOA 850 am.
