Stout Stats: Todd Helton

Marc Stout has a new feature running during the Root Sports pre-game shows this season.  It is an “I Looked It Up” feature, and on Monday’s pre-game show Marc will be spotlighting Todd Helton.

As Marc is a fan, and regular contributor to RWO, he has tossed us his notes so we here in RWO land can read it before we see it…

IT’S ALMOST HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ANOTHER PLAYER HAS WORN THE # 17 FOR THE ROCKIES…

IT’S TRUE, AT LEAST THAT OTHER PLAYER WAS DAVID NIED, THE FIRST DRAFT CHOICE EVER…IN FRANCHISE HISTORY.

PAGE 200 OF THIS YEAR’S ROCKIES MEDIA GUIDE TELLS ME THAT HELTON IS IN THE TOP 10 IN ALL BUT 1 OF THE ROX CAREER BATTING CATEGORIES…

AND THAT’S STOLEN BASES.

BUT TODD IS THE ONLY ROCKIE…EVER…TO STEAL HOME MORE THAN ONCE, REALLY…LOOK IT UP!

(the dates of his steals of home are 5/30/98 and 9/24/2000)

HELTON’S ROCKIES’ NUMBERS MEASURE-UP ALL TIME.

YOU PROBABLY KNOW THAT HE HAS 570 DOUBLES…WHICH IS 21ST ALL TIME; MORE THAN TED WILLIAMS, AND WILLIE MAYS, AND MICKEY MANTLE.

IF HELTON CAN CLAIM 26 TWO BAGGERS THIS SEASON, WHICH I REALIZE COULD BE AMBITIOUS, HE MOVES INTO THE TOP 15.

TODD’S CAREER .420 ON BASE PERCENTAGE, ALREADY 20TH BEST ALL TIME, IS BETTER THAN 120 HALL OF FAMERS.

HE HAS MORE HITS THAN THESE HO– USEHOLD NAMES INDUCTED IN COOPERSTOWN:

JOHNNY BENCH,

BILL MAZEROSKI,

AND YES, JOE DIMAGGIO.

IF TODD CAN MATCH THE 69 GAMES HE PLAYED AS A FIRST BASE LAST SEASON, THIS SEASON…

HE’LL TIE LOU GEHRIG FOR THE 8TH MOST DEFENSIVE GAMES PLAYED AT FIRST.

YEAH, LOU GEHRIG.

HELTON IS 16 HOMERS AWAY FROM 370 IN HIS CAREER.

THIS SEASON HE SHOULD PASS YOGI BERRA, JOHNNY MIZE, AND JOE DIMAGGIO ON THE ALL TIME HOME RUN LIST.

FINALLY, MY FAVORITE TODD HELTON STAT.

NUMBER 17 IS 1 OF 152 PLAYERS WITH AT LEAST 9000 PLATE APPEARANCES.

THAT’S .085 PERCENT OF THE 17,944 THAT HAVE SUITED UP IN THE BIGS.

EVEN BETTER, HE’S 1 OF 32 PLAYERS THAT HAVE THOSE 9000 PLUS PLATE APPEARANCES WITH 1 TEAM.

THAT’S .018 PERCENT…LESS THAN 2 TENTHS OF A PERCENT OF THOSE THAT HAVE PLAYED THE GAME.

THAT STAT, SHOULD MAKE YOU COLORADO PROUD IN THIS 20TH ANNIVERSARY ROCKIES’ YEAR.

Marc, thanks for these stats…watching Todd play at the end of Spring training (especially his 4-4 game), i’m really hoping he ends his career on a high note! He has had an amazing career and, like you told me earlier, many will dispute where he stands all-time, but there is no doubt that he’s given us one heck of a lot of great moments and stayed completely loyal to his Rockies fans!!!

because of the past two years I think we forget what a great player he has been and for most of his career a joy to watch.I am so hoping he can stay healthy enough to go out with some pride, dignity and maybe a few exciting moments.I would be proud to see him as the first Rockie in the hall of fame.If it takes the veterans committee to get him in,I’m afraid I won’t live that long.

Thanks Marc for the great stats and reminding us all of the long dedicated service Todd has given to the fans of Colorado. The all time leader in steals of home by a Rockie is priceless!

Marc,we’re all curmudgeons and skeptics here, but I must say, this is a great, uplifting piece. Thanks much, and best to you for the upcoming broadcast season.
