Swab That Poopdeck, Matey!

Back at it after a refreshingly spirited Saturday night come-from-behind win, the Colorado Rockies aim to sweep the Pittsburgh Pirates on their way this afternoon at Coors Field at 2:10 pm MDT in the finale of a weekend set between the two sides.  Rookie right-hander Chad Bettis (0-1, 6.30) will make his third start for Colorado, facing left-hander Jeff Locke (9-3, 2.47) of the Pirates.

Locke is in his first full season in MLB.  He’s a 6′-0″ tall 26 year-old out of North Conway, New Hampshire, where his exploits earned him the moniker of “Redstone Rocket.”  He is reportedly on a short leash this afternoon on the heels of 27 hits and 10 walks allowed in his last three starts.  Locke took-on the Marlins Tuesday and allowed 3 runs on 9 hits in 5-2/3 innings.  He walked 3 in a game Pittsburgh eventually won on pinch-hitter Josh Harrison’s walk-off big-fly.  Bettis somehow finds himself in the no. 4 slot in the Colorado rotation as the Rockies manipulate their rotation to ensure no. 5 Jeff Manship gets a night’s sleep this time before his next appearance.  Bettis got knocked-around a bit by the Braves in his debut, Atlanta’s third win on a 14-game win streak that ended Saturday.  He was better versus the Mets Tuesday, when he went 5-complete, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.

Colorado manager Walt Weiss told The Denver Post Thursday “there [have] not really been a lot of surprises [this season],” which is a little disturbing from a guy who ran Drew Pomeranz out for three starts.  Nevertheless, he’s filled-out the Rockies lineup card today and has Wilin Rosario filling-in for Todd Helton at 1st base and Michael Cuddyer at cleanup with the Charlie brothers, Culberson and Blackmon, flanking William Fowler in left and right.  Yorvit Torrealba will catch Bettis.  It’s a shuffle job for the Pirates’ Clint Hurdle. Alex Presley leads-off in left-field, and Jose Tabata bats 2nd in right with Neil Walker moving-down to the 5-hole.  Tony Sanchez catches with former Rockie Clint Barmes at short.

The “iffy” August weather continues in Denver this afternoon, with partly cloudy skies predicted and temperatures in the low 80°s.  Humidity’s at 26% and the wind will blow-in from right-center at 5 MPH. Just guessing (since I as wrong yesterday) that Jerry Schemmel’s up with George Frazier and Marc Stout for the TV on ROoT.  And my bet’s on Jack Corrigan doing radio 850 am KOA with the Cowboy Tracy Ringolsby.

I was driving east on I-80 at 75 miles and hour and decided not to check the score on my phone. Lo and behold Rockies sweep the series and Wilin Rosario played first. I’ve been wanting this for over a year. How did he look?

Bill, He looked fine for a 5’11” first basemen. I thought he did a good job and think he is very adequate for the job. It is a good way to sneak his bat in and in the last two months it seems to be doing fine.

Was at the game yesterday and enjoyed it. Thought Wilin looked pretty good at 1st. Made a nice play going to his right to get a ground ball and threw to pitcher. Was drawn off the bag for a play but that might of been Tulo’s fault, not sure from my angle.
