Sweeping Into Denver

The Colorado Rockies return to Coors Field to open the 2015 home season on the heels of an unlikely 3-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers, in Milwaukee.  They face off against the Chicago Cubs in the home opener this afternoon at 2:10 pm MDT.  The Cubs, we’re told, have assembled The Greatest Agglomeration of Talent since the 1927 Yankees, despite losing their home opener to the St Louis Cardinals on national TV.  They’ll be emboldened by the presence of their usual gaggle of slobbering fans, one-time residents of Chicago who for reasons typically undisclosed would rather live elsewhere, but still find nothing more rewarding than going out to the old ball park and rooting against the home team.

Things went almost eerily according to plan for Colorado in Wisconsin.  They got quality appearances from starters Kyle Kendrick, Jordan Lyles, and Eddie Butler, lights-out performances from the bullpen, and lots of offense from their potent lineup.  The Hawk wasn’t supposed to blow that save, of course, but it presented the opportunity for manager Walt Weiss to deploy the Rosario Scenario, and the Baby Bull dutifully delivered a game-winning bomb.

The Rockies turn to left-hander Tyler Matzek (6-11, 4.05 in 2014) for today’s start.  Matzek’s September 5 complete game shutout of the Padres was arguably the highlight of  a season that essentially ended in early June, and his late 2014 performance earned him the opening day honors.  Matzek had only one appearance against the Cubs in 2014, taking the loss in 2/3 of an inning in a 16 inning marathon on July 29.  Chicago will counter with a lefty of its own, Travis Wood (8-13, 5.03 in 2014).  Wood faced the Rockies in back-to-back home-and-home appearances July 30 and August 5, 2014, with no decision either in either outing.  He allowed a total of 7 runs on 12 hits, and struck-out 11 in the July 30 start in Chicago.

Both managers are getting tricky with their lineups this afternoon.  Our old boy Dex leads it off for the Cubs’ Joe Maddon, who has Jorge Soler in the 2-spot, Mike Olt hitting 5th at 3rd-base followed by Matt Szczur, who’ll be in left, and Arismendy Alcantara will hit 9th, following the pitcher Wood.  Weiss is likewise hitting Matzek 8th in an order that features Corey Dickerson leading-off, Tulo 2nd with Carlos Gonzalez hitting cleanup, and Wilin Rosario 5th at 1st-base followed by Drew Stubbs in center.  DJ LeMahieu gets to hit 9th and follow Matzek.

Lunch in LoDo figures to be full-festive and budding with promise.  Gametime Denver temperatures are expected to be in the high 50°s under partly cloudy skies with a gentle breeze drifting from right to left at 5 MPH.  Root Sports has a dandy pregame show scheduled for 1 pm; Jenny and Spilly high-tailed it out of Milwaukee first thing Tuesday to get busy prepping.  The play-by-play with Drew, George and Jeff starts at 2.  Jerry Schemmel and Jack Corrigan will have it on KOA.

There are a lot of teams I don’t want to win the World Series, but the Cubs aren’t one of them. Certainly they are more than due. Unfortunately, I know that when that day comes we will have a new flood of obnoxious fans to put up with, just as we have seen with those once humble/humiliated Red Sox fans. Plus, if it happens in the next two years we’ll have a former Illinois senator currently residing at 1600 Pennsylvania… Read more »

Bob in WV, it is precisely the obnoxious fans that makes it hard for me to cheer for the Cubs (and the Red Sox before them). I know they are long-suffering but what would Cubs fans be like if they won a WS? First they would be over the top and then…poof…they would all disappear because their entire reason to exist is to be miserable. And yes home state Presidents seem to always take credit when their team’s win a… Read more »

I hope for the day when other fan bases are not painted with a broad brush as “obnoxious” based on someone’s personal (and by definition, limited) perception, or prejudice, or whatever the reason. I hate other fans overwhelming Coors Field as much as anybody, by the way, but that doesn’t make all of them obnoxious, nor does finally winning a Series after 86 years make *all* Red Sox fans automatically obnoxious. How about joyous? Can you handle that? If the… Read more »

I wonder if Tyler Matzek isn’t the most important guy in this rotation for the future. It was his setback with finding the plate in 2011 that helped precipitate (granted with other issues) the Ubaldo trade. When drafted a lot of people thought he could be a legit #1. Then last year he was targeted for the bullpen until he came up here and was their best starter in the 2nd half. If Matzek takes a step backward it will… Read more »
