The Rockies are coming off a series win against NL West rival’s the LA Dodgers. Dexter Fowler has been heating up again, and over the past nine games he’s hitting .406 (13-for-32) with 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 9 runs, 11 walks and 1 HBP. His .568 OBP during those 9 games is tops in the Majors. One of his hits was the walk-off against the Dodgers Saturday and two of his HR’s came in Sunday’s game.
Cuddyer is also white-hot heading into Cincinnati. In his last 13 games he is hitting .429 / .463 / .755 with 4-doubles, 4-HR’s, 14-RBI’s and he’s been hit a pitch twice!
The team will have their “honorary ace” on the mound tonight, in the form of Tyler Chatwood. Chatwood (3-0, 2.12) has been masterful on the mound and is coming off a game where he struck out 10 over six innings. His counterpart, Bronson Arroyo (5-5, 3.75) will be making his 13th start this season, 11th career start against the Rockies. His last outing against the Indians he went 5 2/3 and gave up 5-runs on 8-hits with 2-HR’s.
The three game series will be the only one on the road before the team comes home for a 10 game stretch against the Padres, Nationals and Phillies.

I’m pretty excited for the draft…i’m VERY much of the school of thought that you pick up the best player available (oh man, if we’d only done that in some of the past drafts!!!) as opposed to what spot you are trying to fill at the moment. I am very intrigued by Kris Bryant and think he will land where he is projected…Although, Appel might slip to third if Houston and Chicago both pass, fearing he won’t sign if they… Read more »
If a Appel is still available when the Rockies pick I hope he keeps dropping even farther. The Rockies have never had any success drafting a Stanford pitcher and they have drafted more than one as their first pick. Do a search and see just how poorly Stanford pitchers have done in the big leagues. Really glad the Rockies don’t get to pick first.
Honestly, i’m not a fan of the way Appel approached last seasons draft…what a way to burn the team that picks you by saying you want to go back to school for another year. If that was your intent, then don’t enter the draft…if it was about money, then say it was about money (he swears it wasn’t, and if it wasn’t then not cool of him)…it was just a bad situation all around…my thought is he didn’t want to… Read more »
WE need a first baseman to replace Todd. Rockies plan to move him to first if picked. Hitters can fast track to the majors unlike the pitchers.
Still don’t like picking players to fill positions…much rather pick best player…think if we’d done that in years past what players we passed up because we were trying to fill positions – i think Longoria was a much better pick than Reynolds (obviously Kershaw would have beaten anyone on that draft), but the team passed up Longoria because we had our “star third-baseman in the wings” – we all know how that turned out…
The problem isn’t necissarily the philosophy of picking for position or for the best player it’s the problem of evaluating talent and the willingness of the owner to open up their pocket book. Greg Reynolds was picked more because he was “signable” rather than for talent.
Of course DoD will probably pick a quarterback
Kris Bryant is the best hitter in college. not picking him for position. He plays third base and the rockies will move him to first to get his bat in line up.
i agree with that and he is who i vote for…best player who happens to also fit the position we want to fill…but, if Appel is available we’d be dumb to pass him up knowing how hard it is to get top pitching talent to come to Coors on the FA path…
Rumors have it that Gray the top draft pick tested positive for banned substance. #reasonnottodraftpitcher
RMH, really good article on Slate from last fall re: Adderall. The NFL can suspend you for a PED violation, but they can’t say what the PED was. Therefore, lots of speculation that players say “it was Adderall” to avoid the stigma of steroids/HGH. And I gotta say that kind of story would make sense with this Gray kid. I mean, he fits the old steroid/HGH profile, apparently adding about 4-5 mph to his fastball this year and jumping from… Read more »
“Right forearm soreness” for Chatwood? Any time one of our starters gets on a roll he winds up on the DL. Bill, let’s hope they don’t pick another QB … I would take the best player period, whether pitcher or position player. Appel is a senior now. He has no more chips to play. Japan? An independent team? He’s gotta sign with whoever drafts him.
Because Appel is a senior he also doesn’t have to sign by the deadline. Boras can drag the negotiations out as long as he wants to for I believe up to a year.
Actually it’s “right triceps soreness” — not forearm. I guess we won’t know for a while how serious it is, but I’m guessing he gets DL’d at a minimum. And while we finally figured out Zito we’ve done nothing to figure out the righthanded version of Zito, Bronson Arroyo. Soft tossers continue to kill us. I’ll take Matt Cain or Clayton Kershaw or Mat Latos over Zito/Lilly/Arroyo any day.
Of course they didn’t do anything against the hard-thrower Chapman either. Let’s hope it was just the first day of the road trip. It took the Rockies 2 plus games to hit when they returned to Coors Field last week. So far it doesn’t seem that they are hitting much better on the road this year with Bichette than they did last year with Lansford. I think they are playing better because the pitching and D are better though.
Bob K, good point on Appel. Still it seems to me that his negotiating power is greatly diminished by the end of his college eligibility. If he’s on the board I think you have to take him, but he’ll almost certainly be gone in the first 2 picks. Bill, regarding pitching and defense: you are absolutely right. Particularly about defense; greatly improved defense explains a good chunk of the improved pitching too. I’ll go by advanced metrics rather than fielding… Read more »
I’m just hoping with the third pick they get a college player who can make the Rockies no later than the 2016 season.
