SANDY ALDERSON THINKS HE HAS HIS DIFFERENCE MAN IN MICHAEL CUDDYER, THE ROCKIES HAVE BETTER PLAYERS IN COREY DICKERSON, CHARLIE BLACKMON AND DREW STUBBS, PLUS AN ADDITIONAL DRAFT PICK IN 2015. GUESS WHOSE HAPPIEST.
Last week I wrote a post that offered several different scenarios to explain why the Rockies extended the qualifying offer to Cuddy (and the one I listed #1 assumed he was heading to the AL, but the reasoning was I believe why the Mets did sign Cuddy). I then chickened out and put a reply to my own article that it was unexplainable. I did say in that post that the Rockies organization clearly had information that was not common know ledge among the fan base. Evidently GM Bridich did have info we didn’t have, that the Mets were going to go after Cuddy even if it did cost them a draft pick.
The terms of the deal have not been announced, but it had to be close to his last deal, 2 years at $10 mil/year. This will mean that Cuddy hits the free agent market again when it will be his age 38 season that teams will be paying for then, so this may well be the last deal for Cuddy, unless he is great with the Mets, despite the pitcher friendly park at Citi Field. Perhaps after this deal Cuddy heads to coaching, as I am sure many teams would love to have him as a manager at some point (if Raul Ibanez is a finalist for a mangers job then Cuddy should be in 2 years).
Congrats to Cuddy, and good luck Mets (aside from when they play the Rockies). The Mets forfeit the #15 pick this year (and just as important, the bonus money from that slot). The Rockies will get a sandwich pick between the last of the 1st round and the first of the 2nd round. It will depend on who else rejects their qualifying offer and goes to Free Agency and is signed before the draft. The great news is that the Rockies now have $10 million freed up with the end of Cuddy’s deal as well as looking to have 3 of the top 45 or so picks in next year’s draft (it is too early to say if its a deep draft or not).
Well played Jeff Bridich. Those on ESPN and MLB who thought you had no plan and the Rockies were going backwards have to eat their words now…and so do I.
Bonus question – do the Rockies now hold onto Wilin Rosario as a backup catcher and first baseman so they can keep his bat? If not, who is the backup for Morneau at 1st?
