That Loser Look

Well Rockies fans, there’s your answer.  About 50 weeks ago the injury hammer began coming down on the Colorado Rockies, wrecking what had been a hot start for an exciting looking young team. Hopelessly overmatched, their 2014 season disintegrated from that point, but left that tantalizing question:  What Would this Group Look Like with Everyone Healthy?  They’re healthy now, folks, and what do you know but they look exactly the same at full-strength as they did at half strength.

Recapping the losses in a 1-5 week is too demoralizing for a family website, but they included being stifled by the immortal Josh Collmenter on Wednesday, and on Friday committing 4 errors and watching Jorge Rondon fail to get anybody out in an 8-run 8th.  We hardly knew ye, Jorge.

The week started with the news Adam Ottavino had hit the DL with old friend Elbow Soreness, and moments ago the soreness transformed into a “partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament,” and inevitably, Tommy John surgery. It continued with laments surrounding Colorado’s starting pitchers walking everybody in the house, not lasting beyond the 5th, and generally being what they should be expected to be.  By the week’s end people were starting to wonder what happened to that fearsome lineup Zack Greinke allegedly characterized as “best in the league.”

What you’re supposed to do when you have that kind of lineup but poor starting pitching is to score a whole butt-load of runs early in the game to give those poor pitchers some margin for error.  You know they’re going to allow 4 runs in 6 innings, if you can get them that far, so compensate and score 6. You’ve got 6 guys hitting .290 or better, batting champ Morneau at .275, and Cargo.  And you can’t manage to score against Collmenter.  It’s not working.

So we’re back to hoping some home cooking will set the boys on a roll, same as it ever was.  The Arizona Diamondbacks are in for three starting tonight at 6:40 at Coors Field, then the Los Angeles Dodgers hit town for 3 on the weekend.  Wednesday’s afternoon game isn’t televised, so it’s a good opportunity to get out to the old ballpark and root for another tornado to hit.

Collmenter (2-3, 2.76) goes for Arizona tonight, and just watch the Rockies blow him out of the state before the 2nd is over.  He’ll match up with Colorado lefty Tyler Matzek (2-0, 2.70).  Matzek has good numbers but hasn’t exactly been a revelation.  Maybe he’s the man to step-up.  He beat the Dbacks a week ago but only lasted 5 innings.  Collmenter’s masterpiece occurred Wednesday.  He went 8, surrendered 5 hits and struck-out 6 Rockies.

Arizona’s lineup has Mark Trumbo, who was a bit of a beast down in the desert, hitting 2nd in right-field, and former Rockie Jordan Pacheco, who pasted a 3-run shot in Colorado’s face in the Dbacks’ Wednesday win, will catch and hit 7th.  Rockies’ manager Walt Weiss is trying that tricky move where he hits the pitcher 8th.  Troy Tulowitzki and Corey Dickerson are flip-flopped in the 2-3 slots and Gonzalez is still hitting 6th.

It’s supposed to be rainy in Lower Downtown.  Temperatures will be in the 50°s with a bit of wind blowing slightly in from right to left at 9 MPH.  The game will be televised by Root Sports with radio on 850 KOA.

Well, that was good short game. I am not sure that they can get even one in tomorrow although it appears that they might on Wednesday. Anyone know if they might try Thursday. Oh and by the way the weekend looks awfully wet too. Maybe the rest will do them good:-)

The rest surely won’t make them any worse. And the BP won’t have to work much either.

But what the heck do you do with 5 or 6 straight rainouts? 🙂

In SW Littleton it’s raining hard in between raining cats and dogs and torrents. Of course it could be, but I doubt it, 75 and sunny in Lodo. It was just 2 weeks ago or so that Weiss was quoted as saying he wasn’t worried about using the bullpen too much. Since then he’s used the bullpen more and they and everybody else has been worse. I’m used to our pitchers being afraid to throw strikes at Coors but last… Read more »
