Well, for those of us who missed the day and saw late texts or updates from MLB, when you finally look you see….wow…Tulo traded. While a lot of us are thinking to ourselves, okay, if you get a good deal, you do it. Maybe get 2 top 25 or 30 prospects…in the MLB. But no, we see that Tulo was traded for….Jose Reyes, three prospects, none in the Top 50 of any’s lists, and the contract going away.
I was prepared to be excited but…we got a better deal for Ubaldo and that one stunk it up.
We will find out more in the future. All hail the Jose Reyes era, and his glove of holes and his increasing range of…oh wait not.
I guess I just say, bleh.
First big trade of the Bridich era…there is one guy who will be key to the deal. And his fastball is, according to different scouting reports…hard…and straight. Oh boy.
Oh well, the Rox just signaled that they are not in this for 2016. So, everyone want to check back in Spring Training 2017? And given that reality….it only makes sense to deal CarGo (if you compete in 2016 he becomes the center of your offense), DLR, and a few more guys. Clear the deck.

Dr. C., while I like the trade as the best they could do (I have no reason to doubt that no better offer came in), you are correct that the Alex White-Drew Pomeranz return for Ubaldo was better. On paper. At the time. …
… as I predicted, Drew and Jeff talking up Jose Reyes! Feel the excitement!
Major League Pipeline just updated their Rockies Prospect list:
http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/mlb/news/prospects/index.jsp?c_id=col
All three received in the Tulo trade make the top 20.
Top 20 Rox prospects? Or top 20 overall? Doc’s statement about no top-50s and uncharacteristic pessimism are at odds with what I thought I was hearing today. Peter Gammons loved the trade, for just one other.
Ummm, no. Hoffman would have gone much higher in draft if it hadn’t been for TJ surgery. That’s also the reason he’s not top 50 right now. Pomeranz was allegedly a #30 prospect, but he didn’t grade out nearly as well as Hoffman does even right now. White was viewed as high risk with bad mechanics. Enough said. I don’t think the key to the deal is Castro, it’s Hoffman, he’s the rotation guy. Castro profiles out as a reliever,… Read more »
I see Hoffman as a #2 type starter and absolutely see Castro as a Closer.
Dr. C – you make a good point. We have to do a better job with player development.
Tulo doesn’t make to Toronto on time for the game. Hawk throws a perfect inning for the Jays. That made me laugh a bit.
Last night I made a statement that a team that wants to win would make a major move after a night like they had. Well, one thing really had nothing to do with the other (coincidence), but it was one of the more positive things I’ve seen in this team in a while. I still don’t have faith in them developing young pitchers, I think this trade could turn out to be very lopsided in the Jays favor, but if… Read more »
Sorry, but I disagree with the whole “poor player development” thing. Poor drafts? Check. (some of them). Bad luck/pitcher breakdowns? Check. Bad personnel decisions? Check. But in the last decade this organization developed: Tulo Arenado Fowler Iannetta LeMahieu (after the Cubs gave up on him) Dickerson Paulsen (looking like at least a platoon keeper) Seth Smith Yes, fewer pitchers, but: Ubaldo (easy to forget, but he was the best pitcher in baseball for a brief shining moment until his arm… Read more »
You list 4 pitchers. Hammels and JDLR were developed by other organizations. We took them as cast-offs and tweaked them at the Major League level. I wasn’t clear with my poor player development criteria. What I mean is that we are very poor at drafting pitchers, moving them through the minors, and making them useful major league pitchers. So that leaves Ubaldo and Chacin from your list (I add Jeff Francis and Aaron Cook). I agree with your Chacin assessment.… Read more »
Troy who? Oh, the guy Descalso took over for?
Thing of beauty. Tulo-esque and somehow fitting. Good on ya, Daniel.
Clap Clap ClapClapClap ClapClapClapClap….. DESCALSO!
