The Colorado Rockies got All Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and center-fielder Dexter Fowler back from the Disabled List on Thursday, and Friday (with a major leaguer on the mound) they looked restored as a formidable opponent. The past several weeks we’ve been reminded about that absence of right-handed hitting outfielders in the organization that had the BIB dishing out unconscionable, irresponsible quantities of cash to bring Big Money Michael Cuddyer to the Rockies in the winter of 2011. As the All Star Break approaches it looks like Colorado has advanced to the stage where it competes when at full strength, but struggles when pieces are missing.
They’ll be looking to head into the break on a high-note with two of their “Big 3” starters heading to the hill against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine this evening and on Sunday. Tonight at 5:15 pm MDT it’s Tyler Chatwood (5-2, 2.74) for the Rockies against LA’s Zach Greinke (7-2, 3.91) in a battle of right-handers. Chatwood got the win Monday in San Diego, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in 6-2/3. He walked 3 and struck-out 4. Greinke was also up Monday in Phoenix, where he shut-out the Diamondbacks for 7 innings in the Dodger’s 6-1 win. He gave-up only 2 hits and struck-out 7.
Tulowitzki gets a rest against in advance of his Tuesday night appearance on the big stage. The Bean, Jonathan Herrera, is in at short, hitting 8th, and Yorvit Torrealba will precede him, catching Chatwood. The Best Player in the History of Baseball, Yasiel Puig, had a tough encounter with the Meat Brothers’ capitalist wall in Coors Field two weeks ago, and will sit, barely able to hobble up the 1st-base line, his wounds so severe. Skip Schumaker will lead-off in right, Andre Ethier will be in center, and Jerry Hairston Jr will be Don Mattingly’s left-fielder.
The Los Angeles weather will check-in as “normal.” It’ll be sunny with a game-time temperature of 78°, 56% relative humidity and a 6-7 MPH wind blowing across from 3rd-base to right-field. FOX Sports has the TV tonight, with Jerry and Jack back on KOA.
