The Gray Wolf Returns vs. Dodgers 4/22/2016

The Colorado Rockies made a mini-overhaul of their bullpen today.  Miguel Castro with a sore shoulder was placed on the 15-day DL, David Hale was DFA’ed, and Gonzalez Germen was purchased from Albuquerque.  Carlos Estevez and Jason Gurka traded their apartments in ABQ and Denver.  Hale never really helped the Rockies in a little over a year which is why he was DFA’ed.  Walt Weiss explained that he had too many southpaws in the bullpen which is why Estevez is up and Gurka is down.  As everyone knows, Jon Gray was activated from the DL to start tonight against the Dodgers.  His stint on the DL may have done wonders for him; he says a minor correction to his mechanics has gotten his FB velocity back up to 98 while reducing the muscle strain on his chest.

Game time at 6:40 MDT; televised on Root_RM and 850AM radio.

Jon_Gray

Lineup: DJLM, Story, CarGo, NoDo, Reynolds, Parra, Raburn, Wolters, Gray

I would have bet the house the Rox were going to call up Oberg. Instead it’s Estevez (along with German) as Hale gets DFA’d. Yet another move based on merit instead of tenure. This is encouraging. Also encouraging, what few comments I’ve been able to find make it sound as though Castro’s shoulder soreness is truly minor. Hopefully that pans out to be the case. David Hale is mildly intriguing. I won’t be shocked if someone claims for some sort… Read more »

Gonzalez Germen (not to be confused with German Marquez) was called up to replace David Hale. Estevez was called up to replace Jason Gurka who was optioned to Albuquerque.

What’s it like having a SS with 8 HRs and another with 5 HRs in the same organization prior to the end of April. Ask the Rockies. Trevor Story isn’t the only SS mashing. Brendan Rodgers hit #5 in his 60th AB last night. I was impressed Gray shook off the 1st inning last night and was otherwise good and even gave Puig some chin music. Bravo Gonzalez German (the man with two last names). The RF fence extension is… Read more »

“Bravo Gonzalez German (the man with two last names).” Who is Gonzalez German? Gonzalez Germen (pronounced Hermen) pitched for the Rockies last night. The Rockies do have a “German” at Hartford and that is German Marquez.

Do I have it correct that the only game the Rockies have lost with Wolters behind the plate was Tuesday in Cincy? Even in that game Wolters was outstanding as the Reds scored all of their runs in the second inning, an inning in which Walters looked like he could outplay Patrick Roy as he seemed to be blocking everything JDLR was trying to throw past him. Big game for the Rox as they overcame the early deficit against the… Read more »

You are correct. The Rockies are 6-1 when Wolters is catching and 3-6 when anyone else catches. Obviously it can’t last but my opinion is that he makes the pitchers better. He deserves to be the starting catcher but I believe that the way the Rockies do business that Hundley will be the starting catcher once he returns.

Fascinating stat put up by the ROOT gang last night – Wolters has the 3rd best Catchers ERA (warning -SSS) in baseball. AJ Ellis (Kershaw’s personal Catcher was better….I can’t remember the other one). Anyway, the other 4 in the top 5 are clearly working with better pitchers.

A J Ellis is in first place followed by David Ross (catches Jake Arrieta) followed by Wolters. The staff that Wolters catches makes his numbers more impressive.

Last year the Rocks would have lost this game. Showed some heart and toughness. After the first four batters Gray pitched well. What hurt him in the 5th was walking the lead off hitter. So far the biggest plus for the Rocks is that they are not walking batters. Except of course for JDLR. I spent the last few innings watching both the Rockies and the Panthers-Islanders overtime game. Overtime games in the Stanley Cup rival the 7th game of… Read more »
