So, I was thinking about how the Rockies like to use their situation(s) as a crutch for why they CAN’T do something.
Here’s a few, please list more.
- They can’t get free agent pitchers to come here.
- They can’t re-sign top players, unless its during their pre-arbitration years.
- They can’t afford top free agents.
- The pitchers can’t stay healthy because of the altitude.
- The fielders can’t stay healthy because of the size of the park.
- The hitters can’t win awards because of Coors Field stigma.
- The hitters can’t be traded away for fair value because no one trusts their inflated stats.
- The hitters can’t adjust to playing away from Coors.
- They can’t hire external people because they don’t understand what its like here.
- The fans and media can’t question the decisions.
What else CAN’T they do?
11. They can’t help themselves and are raising ticket prices
12. They can’t expect to see me in Coors Field next year
Instructive list. Definitely reflective of a mentality that exists. Like as if until we win the WS all is verboten.
13. They can’t get rid of anyone in upper management that has caused this mess.
13. They can’t let younger players reach the show until they have spent at least a year or two at every minor league level. Hence the “youth” of 27 year-olds.
They can’t have too many second basemen.
They can’t have too many fifth starters.
So true!
Good article from Murray Chass on the Rockies management turmoil: http://www.murraychass.com/?p=5317 My favorite quote: “O’Dowd and Geivett did not return telephone calls seeking enlightenment about the developments in Denver, but according to the story circulating among officials of other clubs, O’Dowd desired to gain the status held by Mark Shapiro, who two years ago became president of the Cleveland Indians after nine years as executive vice president and general manager. O’Dowd and Shapiro previously worked together in the Indians’ front… Read more »
What a clusterpoop this whole thing has become. This team is officially the laughing stock of MLB. It’s obvious now that BIB DOD has absolutely no power in this organization, so why don’t the Monfarts just come out and announce it and make it clear to all. I hope that the next time the team holds a news conference, one of the media shills would ask what exactly is the chain of command in this organization. If another another GM… Read more »
One follow up comment on the story above posted by Ag- What utter and sheer arrogance on the part of BIB DOD to think he deserves a promotion to President. On what grounds? On his stellar track record over the past 13 years? This show how disconnected and disengaged from reality he really is. Either that or he knows how totally clueless the Momfarts are that they would agree to such a thing even he asked for it. Let’s give… Read more »
Thanks for the link, Ag. Outside perspective is always refreshing, even if the news it brings is depressing.
Why is this perspective coming from the outside? I mean outside of Denver. Why aren’t the hard hitting investigative reporters or columnists in our town all over what’s currently going on with the Rox? Are they afraid to report the truth and what is really going on for fear of being blackballed by the team? Are they too busy covering the Broncos? Where is Tracy Ringolsby these days? I’d be interested in getting his perspective on all this. Us die-hard… Read more »
As much as I respect Tracy Ringolsby for helping to create InsidetheRockies and for his past work, IMO he shuts his real analysis of the team down around August every year if the Rockies aren’t in it. Starts focusing on Wyoming football or the rodeo or something. You’re right, no one takes the team to task very hard at all. Probably a symbol of how little the town truly cares about baseball around here. If readers/listeners really cared the media… Read more »
Prog, Ringolsby (and Renck and Saunders — really the only 3 reporters assigned to follow the Rockies if you don’t count officially in-house guys like Thomas Harding) has to be careful about what he says about the Rockies. I don’t know the relationship between the Rockies and Root, but as I understand it it’s fairly typical for the club to have a big say in who reports on the games. And with the Rockies it’s even heightened beyond that since… Read more »
Yesterday ESPN radio played a press conference with Girardi. He was going on and on about how they have the technology for replays but won’t use it. When he finally ran out of things to say, someone said – Joe, your team didn’t score any runs. And I wished that there was someone in Denver who would confront the BS like that.
This is slightly off topic, but worth pointing out that Jason Hammel is starting the biggest game of his life today. I wonder what Jeremy Guthrie is doing today.
He’s riding his bike!
That made me laugh out loud!
and he is pitching masterfull…at least through the first 11 batters so far (i’m behind by a few)…
Guthrie just gave up a 6 run inning on his Wii.
Rox management CAN’T understand why the fans are so pissed at them.
Rox management CAN’T understand why the team didn’t play well in 2012.
Rox management CAN’T see daylight, because:
Rox management CAN’T stop the madness long enough to pull their heads out.
At the end of the 2013 season, if what’s left of this same “management team” is allowed to stay.
Rox management CAN’T understand why nobody comes to Coors Field to watch the games anymore.
Ag, I hear what you’re saying about reporters not wanting to rock the boat for fear of being blackballed by the Rox, but hasn’t the Cowboy earned enough equity as a HOF writer to be above that? As a member of the journalistic community he should be expected to tell his loyal following what he knows of what is really going on with the Rox organization (not that we don’t already know).
I promised this a while ago. What if O’Dowd had done absolutely nothing? That is, pretend he made zero moves starting from the Ubaldo trade last year. Would the club have been better or worse? Rules: I won’t count in-organization rookies in either the additions or subtractions; they could’ve been called up in either scenario. This is just players traded for or traded away, or signed as free agents or let go as free agents. Additions (with Wins Above Replacement… Read more »
Maybe Strasburg could’ve pitched ONE MORE FREAKIN INNING this year, like the 9th inning of this game …
This nightmare season continues. I was rooting for the O’s, A’s, Reds, and Nats. I guess that dooms the Tigers in the ALCS. I don’t care in the NLCS at this point.
I’m with you there Bob. But the way I see it now, we have 2 chances to knock off the Giants. Soon I’m now pulling for the Cards, and whichever AL team matches up better against SF – not sure which team that is.
Ideally we will see a St L vs Detroit W S.
Bob, couldn’t agree more. For a time I thought we might see some real new blood in the World Series … if I were a betting man I’d say Cards-Yankees is now the likely outcome. Which is about the only thing that would turn me into a Cards fan. (Or Giants fan for that matter.) At least we had some thrilling games at the end there …
Tigers win two in NY, SL beats the Giants. Three games finally go my way. A Tigers-Cardinals WS would be the best outcome at this point, with Detroit evening things up with the Cards. Cards beat Tigers in ’34 and ’06, Tigers beat Cards in ’68.
As much as I dislike the Yankees, I must say I am sorry to see Jeter get hurt. What a great player he has been for so darn long.
Yesterday was a perfect day. Giants lost, 49ers lost, Yankees lost.
Did anyone think the same as me when Jeter got hurt? The Rox will trade Tulo to the Yanks for a 2nd baseman, an outfielder, and some 5th starters who won’t be able to throw strikes.
YES!!!
I was just about to make the same comment!!! LOL
Ah, yes, 1968. I was at Ft. Sam Houston, getting my final training before going to Vietnam. And then, in spite of the marvelous and historic Gibson year, ol’ fat Mickey Lolich won the series for the Tigers. It has hurt my heart ever since. Sure wish Flood had made the catch, but can’t hold it against him, in deference to his great career, and his principled challenge to the Reserve Clause.
P.S. As you can tell, I’m old!
Yep, robba, Curt Flood refused to report to my beloved Phillies in what was a huge trade involving Dick Allen and Tim McCarver. As compensation for Flood not reporting, the Phils got Willie Montanez. Montanez played well for Philly and was eventually traded straight up for Gary Maddox, in what was surely one of the best trades in Phillies history. (The best had to be getting Steve Carlton for Rick Wise, but I digress.) As Philllies fans for a team… Read more »
Note (since I can’t edit the above) the 65′ high roof was at Connie Mack Stadium (previously Shibe Park).
I hope Scutaro is ok. Personally, I’m shocked Holiday didn’t get drilled. I will be curious to see what happens in a couple of games.
I sure hope whoever beats the heck out of the Tiger, nothing against them as a team. However, I do carry a grudge against Leland that will NEVER go away! Also, the Yankees are embarrassing something like 1 run in 20 innings? Geeish
