The Rockies welcome the reeling Padres to Coors today for the first of a three game series. The Padres are coming off a difficult three-game sweep by the Dodgers that ended in a triple play that will be disputed for days to come.
CarGo will sit this one out, apparently still down with strep throat, and Tyler Colvin will take his place in left field. The other starters for tonight’s 6:40 start time are:
Scutaro
Fowler
Tulowitzki
Helton
Cuddyer
Colvin
Hernandez
Nelson
Guthrie

CarGo is available to pinch-hit…they changed his medicine so he is feeling a lot better…told Troy Renck that he almost passed out on Friday after rounding the bases…
CarGo just tweeted, “Good afternoon to my followers, I still have sore throat, I am recovering slowly, thanks for your good wishes”
Glad he or his publicist didn’t word it again as “Carlos is at rest” which kinda sounds fatal.
Got chat setup for tonights game…i’ll be watching it with my Father-in-law, a huge Dodgers fan who lives in San Diego and love the Padres as well, but loves me the most so I’m sure he will be rooting for the Rox! I’ll jump on and chat during the game with ya all!
Cool. I’ll be on late, have a church group tonight. I just sent you an email with a sample of what I’m working on.
I just got an email from the Padres, which I get frequently, asking if would be willing to participate in a survey. I think this will be an important series for both teams.
wow. great. already behind.
Colvin is going to make it difficult for Tracy to sit him down…or at least it would be a difficult decision for a majority of managers not named Jim Tracy…;)
I say they use the purple tips to wax their cars. I’m not into the look!
Tops. 😉
Anybody know why the Rock’s purple jerseys look like Dodger blue on TV? There are folks with purple on in the stands that look purple, so it can’t just be the lighting. Why can’t the Rockies use the same purple that’s on the scoreboard, a true purple, to look different from all the many clubs (including the Padres) who use blue as a major color?
Just sayin’ the Rockies should wear purple on Purple Mondays, not blue.
Jeremy Guthrie has not impressed so far…
Whatever happened to workIng the pitcher. We are first pitch swinging big time. Small crowd here at the park.
Hey Swede, you at the game? it looks cold…
Prog, Neil, DRH, swede – chat with us above…we got a few RWO’rs chatting…
Yes. I’m here. It’s cool but not cold. Was here Friday and will be here tomorrow. Hard core I guess.
hey Swede…come on over to the bus if you want…at the same place as when we first met…bus will arrive around 5:45
I will be arriving ‘late’ to tomorrow’s game. Arrival around 7:00 to 7:15. Hope we can still catch up again sometime!
Guthrie actually makes me miss Jason Hammel.
way to go down fighting rockies wow! this team is gutless right now! Horrible!
Sorry Swede, just closed chat thinking everyone was gone and saw your post…
No prob! Thanks do much for setting it. It was the highlight of the evening … unfortunately. 😉
Only good news tonight: Friedrich, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K (complete game 7 inning make-up game). Arenado 1-3, RBI in Tulsa’s 4th win in a row. Don’t know about you folks, but I’m ready to see these guys at Coors Field real soon.
Ag, as a follow up to your previous post- Last night in Modesto:
Tyler Matzek- 6 IP, 5 H, 6 Ks, 2 BB (1.72 ERA). Left game with lead, BP blew save. If he keeps this up he may be in line for a Tulsa promotion later this summer.
How’d giving all those guys rest work out for us today? Oh yeah.
As you can see tonight, you can’t guarantee victories playing your best players…but its pretty easy to guarantee defeats playing your worst. Nice way to turn a 2 game winning steak into 2 loss streak. Now it will be a chore to have a positive home stand.
Anyone see the Nuggets tonight?!?!
Just kidding – I don’t give a damn about the Nuggets. 2012 seems long already. Wish I could put my finger on why the Rockies look so bad, but I don’t have that many fingers. Anyway, I posted a piece on the 2012 Rox through 10 games on my little blog site. Stop by if you have a chance!

Actually I went to tonight’s miserable game and when I heard the Nuggets got a huge win in what sounded like a great game I was kind of sorry I missed it. Instead I shivered along with everyone else and witnessed another bad top of the first as the NL’s worst-hitting team got a pair against Guthrie, a struggling offense that could do nothing against a lefty most of us have never heard of and a truly terrible game by… Read more »
well when our no1 starter led the AL in losses last year you know your pitching is terrible, we allow a lot of early leads which puts too much pressure on our offense and defense. this start in my eyes is all on our starting pitching, I never understood why they never went for edwin jackson in the offseason. Tulo will get it together there is no question about that. his errors are a slight concern but the conditions have… Read more »
I need to do a little research project here, but doesn’t it seem like the Rockies are giving up a lot of 1st inning runs? What are our pitchers doing to prepare for the games? Do they need to stretch more or throw a few more pitches in the pen? Maybe Bob Apodaca could look into this for us.
What do you guys think when Tracy comes out and basically says, “I want to commend our starting pitcher for giving our bullpen some much needed rest.”
I mean, the guy pitched like shit and the first thing you do is throw him a compliment? Ok. Fine for the media I guess, hopefully they address the problem a little bit beyond that behind the scenes rather than just blowing it off.
From the game recap on NYT:
“Rockies LHP Jorge De La Rosa tossed 60 pitches a four-inning simulated game on Monday.”
So why has Guthrie been so bad his last 2 starts? First theory: getting killed on balls in play (lots more balls dropping in for hits and for doubles in the gaps than his norm). That theory is wrong. Opposing batters are hitting .273 against him on balls in play. That’s actually a bit low. So “bad luck” is not the answer. Second theory: too many balls in play because he’s not missing any bats. That theory is correct. He’s… Read more »
Nice analogy.
I wonder how many starts like this until the Rockies offer Guthrie a contract extension. Seems like something they would do.
