Today is the big day. The non-waiver trade deadline. 4PM ET. Let’s post our final trade thoughts here.
Will Cargo be dealt? (he should)
Will Blackmon be dealt? (he should)
We know Wilin and Axford have no trade value. Stubbs and Descalso have no trade value. Honestly – even though his salary seemed modest at the time – it’s safe to say JDLR has no trade value. In my opinion, Reyes does have some value, but is a better candidate for the waiver deadline or even the off-season. Dickerson had trade value before the injuries – but has none at the moment.
Of course NoDo and DJ have all sorts of trade value……but it’s asking way too much for the Rox to think that progressively.
Other things I’ll be watching;
Padres – can Preller undo his failed experiment?
Yankees – I don’t buy Dustin Ackley being their lone acquisition.
Reds – Dealt Leake last night, Cueto last week. Bruce and Chapman remain.
Mets/Orioles/ChiSox – all need an OFer.
Cards – need some sort of big bat.
Hopefully Bridich didn’t get any sleep last night……and not because he’s fretting about Axford. Hopefully he was on the phone with other teams. And…..in between those phone calls, let’s hope he remembered to make one to ABQ to call up Miguel Castro.
I’m watching Carlos Carrasco with some interest. Carrasco is sort of the SP equivalent to John Blackmon. Good player. Really good the last 2 years. Late bloomer. Signed through 2018 at a reasonable +/- 6M per year. 28 years old (29 when next season begins). Blackmon will be 30 when next season begins. Blackmon’s arbitration years begin next season…….so his cost will likely be similar to Carrasco. Cleveland has been semi-actively shopping him. It probably indicates they believe their contention… Read more »
The Carrasco show on twitter is pretty funny. Some very adamant fans out there.
It would hurt to lose Charlie since he’s been a pleasant surprise, but again — this team is terrible with him, it’ll be terrible without him. And maybe better in a couple years if he yields a good prospect or two. And he’s the classic “sell high” guy. I think Arenado is untouchable for practical/fan revolt reasons. But Charlie, well, the casual fan isn’t going to notice. I agree — other than Cargo, the best trade candidate we’ve got. Hundley… Read more »
Ag – if we do a Cargo deal with the Cards – one pitcher we should ask for in return is Sam Tuivailala. He profiles the same as Miguel Castro.
Well the Orioles and Gonzalez rumor can be officially squashed now. They got Parra and are still working Revere but the Blue Jays are alleged to be in the mix too.
Thanks for the update Mike. The Orioles Farm is super-weak with the exception of the two pitching studs at the top – Dylan Bundy and Hunter Harvey. And unfortunately, both of those guys are hurt – and Bundy’s situation really looks a bit bleak at the moment. He could be similar to Kerry Wood / Mark Prior without even the 1-2 years of Major League success. So………………without giving up those two guys, they’re really limited to the Parra’s and Revere’s… Read more »
Ok I’m not sure what the hec Toronto could or maybe even is giving up to get Carrasco but if this behind the scenes rumor is true I would think they will have mortgaged the farm to win now. And they are still looking for another bat.
And isn’t nice that Tulo has now seemingly become a media darling since going to Toronto. Tulolegitski? seriously?
the Tuloronto sign was my favorite…
Yep that was funny
Almost forgot. Cardinals got Broxton so we may will probably see him.
I can’t believe I am saying this but I actually agree with the Yankees and their take on the trade deadline this season. Several teams that stated their top prospects are not touchable have traded them to win now.
Mike – there’s sort of a new saying in baseball – “Prospects are Baseball Currency.”
Hmmmmmmmm…….looks like Jay Bruce may not be going to New York either.
Because they don’t want Wheeler as the center piece of the trade
latest rumorfest: Carrasco to Jays Mark Lowe to the Jays Jays out on Revere Kimbrel to Astros “some” bat or Jay Bruce to the Mets “some” bullpen/closer to the Cubs. Red Sox listening on Sandoval. *SUGGESTED* the Mets consider Carlos Gonzalez.
Cepedes[sic] to Mets for OF bat.
Done deal Mark Lowe to Toronto for whatever prospects they have left. Maybe some grounds crew thrown in.
This time next year they’ll be trying to pull off what the Padres are attempting to do now…….dump salaries!
Mike – will Toronto be able to field AAA and AA teams today?
LMAO good question
It sure would be easy to trade Cargo to the Cardinals. He could just walk across the field to the Cards Clubhouse and suit up (and smack Carlos Martinez in the process).
Alrighty Ladies and Gents – I’m leaving the trade deadline with you. I’m headed for the mountains – which no doubt means a traffic jam somewhere on I-70 with no cell service. I’ll catch up tonight. Seeing a few “Rox will hold Cargo for waiver deadline or offseason” tweets. I find this really, really risky. It “could” pay-off big – but I have more of a “bird in the hand is worth two in bush” type of mindset, so I… Read more »
Not sure where you are going but we will be at Copper doing some down hill tomorrow
Confirmed IF Cargo is ever traded it won’t be until the winter meetings. Thank you Mr. O’Dowd for that update
O’Dowd talking about what AJ Preller might do and the pressure on him: “It depends totally on the synergy within the organization. If the ownership and the president are squarely behind sticking with it or going into sell mode, it’s really easy for the GM. If there’s any dysfunction in that relationship and you’re on the island by yourself, the heat is really uncomfortable because at the end of the day, you know you’ve got nowhere to run. The moves… Read more »
Yep This subject was broached last weekend on MLBtv. He tried to stay neutral but it was easy to read between the lines.
Summary of today for our club:
Well, that’s behind us. Nolan and Carlos are now Nodo and NoGo. Now the team can focus on winning 21 of 22 to get back in the pennant race.
Like it Bob! Now ship me some of that cannabis infused Kool-Aid.
LOL!!!
Tangent: (and maybe you all have completely moved on from Tulo) but I am curious why he is leading off?
Another tangential comment (for the site managers): last night and again tonight I have gotten an email asking me to confirm whether I want notifications of RWO posts. It said I would “never be bothered again” if I ignored this email. Which I did.
What’s up? Thanks.
(No, I did not request any notifications)
Except maybe by accidental click – :). Ooooh, wish the site offered a delete comment option – sorry.
weird…
Rox mgmt as much as admitted they handled Tulo’s trade badly, saying they would communicate with players. See Marc Stout’s sideline report in the 3rd tonight.
I’m talking to myself tonight. Everybody out enjoying summer? 🙂
Relief guys who walk pitchers maybe shouldn’t be MLB roster members.
Friedrich sure is inconsistent from night to night.
Thought it was highly ironic that Jerry was trying to talk about what makes the Cards so good so consistently as GG was walking the pitcher.
Quick trade deadline synopsis FWIW: For me, I’m looking at one deal. Cespedes to the Mets for Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa. Mets eat the final 3.7M of his contract (he a rental player). Fulmer started the year as roughly the Mets 15th rated Prospect…..depending on the publication you favor. Really nice pitcher…..but not great. Cessa is not a Mets top 30 (keep in mind the Mets have a strong Farm at the moment…..so their 15th may be another team’s… Read more »
I just bought the half-season of MLB Extra Innings on Directv so I could watch some pennant races. I saw Tulo score the winning run in extras tonight and I have not seen that young man smile like that in YEARS. Good for you #2. Will always miss you, but Fresh-Start-o-Rama is on display!
And I turned off the Rockies when the score went to 7-0 or something.
You catch our good friend Franklin Morales’ balk that moved Tulo to second and setup to score the winning run?… Good old Frankie called for balking more than any pitcher I know. It wasn’t even Balking Bob this time.
That was Bridich’s big moment…to bad he didn’t go all of the way…he only went part of the way and an “all or nothing” is what we needed from him…bummer…
Didn’t watch any baseball tonight or last night and probably won’t watch any this weekend as we are busy doing family and outdoors stuff. Finally dry enough to enjoy the summer. But the Rockies continue their ineptitude. Using a pitcher to pinch hit, losing Kendricks to an injury, Corey Dickerson to an injury etc., etc. Losing Kendricks is not a bad thing other than to Kendricks. I don’t wish anybody to be injured. But if he wasn’t he would be… Read more »
Guthrie still wins the Worst Pitcher Acquisition race, but only because he was paid more. (Disclosure: I actually liked getting Guthrie at the time. I didn’t like getting Kendrick.) Amazing how almost everything Bridich and O’Dowd have done recently goes wrong. No one expected Kendrick to be good. Be was a classic 5th starter – just a tick above replacement level. But even I thought it was pretty safe to pencil him in for about 170 marginally acceptable starter innings.… Read more »
I respectfully disagree (and keep in mind I’m frivolous with Owner’s money). I saw Guthrie pitch in ST the year he came in and he looked really good. His pedigree (OK – strong word when debating Guthrie and Kendrick) was better than Kendrick’s. Of course the regular season started and he sucked……..we all know that. If it had ended there, I would agree that’s he’s worse than Kenrick. But to Royals salvaged him and he did some good work for… Read more »
Nice article, seemingly very honest interview: http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_28570386/jeff-bridich-deadline-doesnt-mean-trading-season-is Reyes will definitely pass through waivers. JDLR will definitely pass through waivers. In both cases……..even if something did workout, don’t expect much in return. Just some salary relief (which isn’t insignificant). I’m not sure if Cargo would pass through waivers or not. Unrelated but significant. Kyle Parker called. Dickerson’s ribs will be slow healers, so I expect Parker will remain with the big Club for the rest of the year. Dickerson needs some… Read more »
Julian I think the Mike Hampton deal will impact the Rockies for awhile. Even after pitchers cycle thru MLB there will still be that lingering ” hey I don’t want to pitch in Coors”. I wonder how many current pitchers absolutely do not want to come here today. Bet the number is pretty high.
sdcarp, that article is based on the conference call that happened shortly after the trade deadline ended. I’m not sure if Jare is in touch with Marc Stout but it would be awesome if he would do a story on his take of the call. I know he asked some good questions.
Sorry but I respectfully disagree that JDLR would pass waivers.
In terms of long term negative impact, weren’t Hampton and Neagle the Worst Pitcher Signings?
sdcarp, Julian — I guess it depends on how you define “worst free agent pitcher acquisition.” Setting aside the real cheapo signings (Jason Marquis?) … If it comes to “worst pitcher at the time we acquired him,” it’s Kendrick and it ain’t even close. If it’s “worst bang for your buck,” it’s Hampton. If it’s a single season “most money for the least return” it’s Guthrie. (Although I think Guthrie was technically a trade) But one thing we do know… Read more »
The reason I don’t believe JDLR will be claimed if placed on waivers isn’t due to $$$$. His contract is reasonable. It’s my belief that it’s known in the baseball industry that JDLR is “soft” mentally. Presumably……the claiming team would be in the playoff race. I don’t think teams will want to pick him up and place him in that type of pressure situation. Also……I don’t see JDLR adapting to a relief role (common for #4 and #5 starters) in… Read more »
