Value Analysis

The Colorado Rockies – Los Angeles Dodgers 2012 series stood at 6 games each prior to the 3-game match-up that commenced yesterday in Denver.  Aspiring for more, the Dodgers executed their now infamous $260 million talent grab Saturday morning only to see the barely major-league Rockies make that split 7-6 Colorado with a 10-0 shellacking Monday evening.  LA is now 1-2 since the big deal and getting just a mite anxious to begin asserting the expected dominance it’s going to take to overcome the Giants, Braves, World Champion Cardinals and Pirates to make the National League playoffs. They’ll send lefty Chris Capuano (11-9, 3.37) to the Coors Field mound Tuesday against Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 4.98) of the Rockies for a 6:40 pm MDT start.

Chatwood, 2-2/3.38 as a starter for Colorado, makes his sixth appearance since an August 5 recall.  The right-hander has pitched with mixed-results, lasting 5 and 6 innings in wins over San Francisco and Milwaukee but getting knocked around in just 4 in a 6-run loss to the Marlins.  He worked only 3, albeit shut-out, innings Thursday in the Rockies’ 1-0 defeat of the Mets.  Capuano has been steady for the Dodgers, but has only 2 wins in his last 10 outings.  He lost last Wednesday versus the Giants, surrendering 6 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings.

Josh Rutledge returns to the Colorado lineup this evening, back at shortstop and batting second. Carlos Gonzalez gets at least part of the night off with Andrew Brown taking his spot in left.  Right-fielder Charlie Blackmon hits in the 8-hole.  Don Mattingly is swapping Mark Ellis and Shane Victorino in the 1-2 slots for LA tonight.  Adam Kennedy will be at third-base.

The temperature in Lodo at game time is expected to be down to 87° F under partly cloudy skies, and will drop steadily, as a 35% chance of showers develops in the later innings.  Relative humidity will be around 23% and winds will be from the west at 7 MPH, swinging around from north to south as the contest progresses.  Jenny, Marc, Joel and the Cowboy will flank Drew and Jeff for another fascinating visual display on ROOT Sports while poor old Jerry and Jack lay-low on radio KOA 850 am.

Thought I’d get on here first and ask: Is anyone else going to the game on Saturday? If so, I’d like to meet you and have a beer.

Out of town on Labor Day weekend, Bob. Otherwise I’d be there. We were talking about September call-ups the other day and the 40-man roster limiting them. To be brutally honest, here’s some guys who could be released (and thereby removed from the 40-man) without any risk: Tommy Field Charlie Culberson Guillermo Moscoso Jonathan Sanchez Edgmer Escalona The last 2 are on the 15 day DL but count against the 40 man roster, which is currently at 39. That would… Read more »

Total 2012 salary for our starting 9 tonight: $4.32 million
Total 2012 salary for the Dodgers starting 9 tonight: $73.24 million.
Result: Rockies 8, Dodgers 4

Yeah, it’s only 2 games, but how’s that for a value analysis? Gotta love it.

(Expect Troy Renck to steal this tomorrow, without attribution)

Almost, Ag. It was Patrick Saunders who stole it.

* The Rockies started six rookies and took the field with a starting lineup (including the pitcher) with a combined salary of $4.5 million. The Dodgers countered with a lineup that cost $74.2 million. Go figure.

Jeem, just in case folks didn’t catch it: that $4.32 million combined salary for our starting 9 means that every single player on Jim Tracy’s lineup card tonight makes the minimum salary. Every single one. Did I say EVERY SINGLE ONE?
