The Colorado Rockies got a dose of leadership and a big win over the Pittsburgh Pirates from Jhoulys Chacin after a dismal week in Atlanta, where rumors had bench coach Tommy Runnells staying behind to gather some tips from General William Tecumseh Sherman on more proven tactics for subduing the local populace. Chacin was seen traversing the Colorado dugout, exhorting his teammates one end to the other, before taking the mound and dominating the Pirates on 6 hits over 8 innings. Chacin’s effort was similar to the one he delivered on June 22, when he selected batting practice jerseys as the Rockies’ fashion statement in a 7-1 victory over Washington.
Colorado sends the more reticent, wily and enigmatic left-hander Jorge De La Rosa (10-5, 3.21) out to challenge the Pirates this afternoon at 5:05 pm MDT at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Rockies have a tall-order on their hands, as George of the Roses will be opposed by fellow lefty Francisco Liriano (11-4, 2.16), as they dream of a potential weekend road sweep of an NL Central Division leader, kind of like the one they pulled-off in St Louis four summers ago. De La Rosa got banged-around a bit Monday in the opening debacle in Georgia, lasting only 5 and surrendering 5 runs on 10 hits. Liriano won Monday over the Cardinals, limiting them to one run over 7 innings in Pittsburgh’s 9-2 triumph.
Big Money Michael Cuddyer returns to the Colorado lineup tonight, cleaning-up and playing 1st-base. The corner outfield spots will be occupied by the two Charlies, Blackmon in right and Culberson in left. The venison toting Clint Barmes gets the night-off for the Pirates, with Jordy Mercer batting 2nd at shortstop. Gaby Sanchez will be at 1st-base, Tony Sanchez will catch, Jose Tabata will be in right and Josh Harrison at 3rd-base as Clint Hurdle pulls a major switch-a-roo against De La Rosa.
It’ll be a cool evening in the Steel City, under partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 70°s. The wind on the banks of the Allegheny will blow-out toward left-center at about 7 MPH. It’s Drew Goodman with Jeff Huson and Marc Stout for the television on good old ROoT Sports with Jerry and Jack doing that “happy” thing over on KOA 850 am.
