The Colorado Rockies jumped out to a 7-1 lead after five innings. And then the nuclear meltdown was found in the bullpen. The San Francisco Giants scored 11 unanswered runs to run away with a 12-7 victory. I was at the game myself and I could sense some trash coming our way that I left the game and headed for home in the middle of a Giants rally in the top of 7th inning. It has been so bad that you can look into the crystal ball and know what’s coming. Here’s my personal observations (my own opinions and not representative of RWO’s editors):
The game was probably the worst game of the year based on just the last four innings played. The spotlights were squarely on the bullpen and Walt Weiss’ bullpen moves. That was 60% of the problems in 2014. (30% of problems is hitting on the road and 10% rotation) I credit Weiss for managing the team well and having the players wanting to play for him despite the woeful season, but if he cannot manage the bullpen he has to be fired. The entire season Weiss has failed to note that TMI and Matt Belisle are not the guys to douse the opponents’ rallies. In fact, TMI and Belisle are the opposite. Their jobs should be in the hotels serving cookies to the visiting teams. To a smaller extent, the medical staff needs to step up their authority. The best examples were that Boone Logan, Tyler Chatwood, and Jhoulys Chacin were pitching at 60% of their health before finally being shut down. (Same thing can be said for CarGo’s finger injuries and knee tendinitis in which we wasted two months of CarGo playing the role of Berlin Wall in the lineup).
Let’s go back to last night’s game. Lyles was pitching well through five innings. I, not Weiss, could see that Lyles wheels were starting to wobble. Lyles started to lose command of his pitches late in the fifth inning when he let a pinch hitter cold off the bench get ahead on a 3-1 count. That made it easy for the pinch hitter to hit an RBI single to score the Giants’ first run of the game. Next inning (6th), Posey again got ahead 3-1 and took advantage of a get-me-over pitch to launch a solo shot. Lyles gave up another home run, a two run shot to a journeyman catcher. At that point it narrowed the Rockies lead to 7-4. I was expecting Lyles to be lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of 6th. NO! He not only batted but went back out for the 7th inning. I was thinking it will be the fourth time through the Giants lineup. No way he stays in. Guess what? He stayed in and continued serving cookies. Weiss then went to Belisle who has been horrible 75% of the time and let the Giants have a feast. So clearly the bullpen and Weiss need to be replaced. It really bothered me that he had all the call ups available from the expanded roster, yet Weiss keeps going back to TMI and Belisle in late and close situations. Even Rod Scahill and Thomas Kahnle could do no worse and they were available. Mr. Weiss, look at the 2014 pitchers not the 2013 pitchers.
Ladies and gentlemen, that was the whole season woes in one game last night. Bullpen has to be made over and Weiss has to be fired if he doesn’t understand how to use his bullpen. He had two years to learn how to handle the bullpen; yet all he has shown me is to go to TMI and Belisle in critical situations over and over.
