Why are the Rockies So Bad Offensively

Okay, we know they have had some bad early season struggles, especially on the pitching mound, which took a quality bullpen and chewed it up. But even when they have gotten good pitching they have really struggled offensively. They can get homeruns but getting 3 hits and a walk, or 4 hits in an inning? It just isn’t happening. And so this team is both struggling and boring. So a poll for today:

Who/What is the Reason for the Early Season Offensive Struggles

  1. Tulo – he has been hitting like a 35 year old Cal Ripken and even had period of bad defense. Without Tulo being special, this team isn’t special.
  2. CarGo – it wasn’t just that he was bad for a month, he was far worse than bad for a while most of this season, and CarGo is a bigger aspect of this offense than we might remember.
  3. Morneau – With someone who usually fills the 4 or 5 spot, his return to below normal production is a bad thing. Maybe the concussion issues are back.
  4. Dickerson – his foot went pop and his production went pop as well.
  5. Bench – whether it is Stubbs and the K machine or Ynoa’s early season issues or Descalso hitting sub .200…oh, you get the picture.
  6. Starting pitching – getting behind 5-0 means you have to push offensively. And they have had to push a lot lately.
  7. The strange desire to strikeout and now walk. Who does that?
  8. Some other issue that I cannot see…
  9. All of the above. For the love of all that is good, all of the above.

For me, it’s just two things and almost everything else takes care of itself. It’s the entire team, not just a collection of individual slumps.

1) stop swinging at balls out of the zone and they get themselves into hitter counts. They’re even swinging at ball 4s.

2) Pitchers gotta throw first pitch strikes and in turn fill up the zone; I’d rather see the other team beat our pitcher, not beat themselves with BBs or HBPs.

Just watching tonight, guys (with the surprising exception of Cargo) aren’t taking many pitches. This seems to be a fundamental difference between the Rockies and every other team. Our guys want to blast away every AB, there’s no patience at all and precious little discipline, even in favorable counts. O-2, 1-2 counts are amazingly common-place among our guys, at home and the road. And then they take a pitch and get rung-up for a K. I don’t know who should… Read more »

most doubles were seeing eye doubles and one was a pop up that Tulo did not get after and let Ynoa look silly.

Going into tonight … Rockies swing percentage is 48.8%, 4th highest in MLB, so they are firing a lot. Their contact rate is 77.6% (that’s fair and foul), near the bottom. Nowhere near the top in Ks, Cubs (363) and Astros (356), Rox at 293. Rox are right at MLB average in pitches/plate appearance, 3.78. The Royals are an interesting case. They have the highest swing rate (49.8%) and the lowest number of Ks (213). Their contact rate is 82.1%.… Read more »

Why are we so bad offensively? 1. As noted above, not good at working counts. 2. As a result, we don’t take walks. 3. Can’t manufacture runs (essentially – the Rockies have never done this) 4. Can’t steal bases (essentially – the Rockies have never done this) This offseason I was a fan of signing Emilio Bonafacio (we got Delcalso instead). Bonafacio could have helped with #3 and #4. A couple of you guys have adopted Rox Farm Hands –… Read more »

OK. Now we know. Walt has suicidal tendencies relative to keeping his job. He WANTS to be fired. That was the dumbest use of a reliever in quite a while. “Blown” Logan kept in for SIX batters????

And what’s with Speedy Stubbs loafing in on that flyball, then giving up? What the H is so difficult about calling for the ball. Stupid, stupid baseball, on the field and in the dugout.

Arenado is getting the Tulo/Cargo roll-over ground ball disease…..

Note, eighth inning, FIVE (5), Cinco, pitches for two outs from two of the offensive geniuses–guys that can “really rake”….

Hundley bails them out, for now. Then Stubbs makes sure the margin is only one. And he wasn’t even close on his swinging strike three.

Tonight reminded me how smart I was to give up my season tickets many years ago. When I had them I would go to game when I was freezing my ass off. Glad Hundley hit his homer, but he should have stopped that wild pitch. We’ve been getting on Rosario (for good reason) for the past few years but that “wild pitch” was a pitch that a good catcher should have stopped. And our defensive center fielder Stubbs should have… Read more »

Drafting the best player available philosophy may not be the rite way to approach player development. I know, this flies in the face of what many believe is the way to handle the farm system. Baseball America’s mock draft has the Rox adding yet another SS with their initial pick based upon the best player available. How many more SS prospects does this team need? Granted this year’s supply of power arms is pretty slim but still…. And my foster… Read more »

I realize Barnes is batting .205 at AAA. But that dude is a scrapper, much rather have a guy like that then Stubbs.

I’m thinking Stubbs sealed his demotion because of the bloop hit in front of him in the 8th (?) inning last night. He’s hitting .100, striking out 60% of the time. But he’s been a great defensive center fielder. Took his hitting problems out to center with him last night. Of course Barnes as noted above is hitting .205 in AAA. I think he’s being called up to add some color, in the form of some tattoos, to the team.… Read more »
